Cook's World

details

Imagine a kitchen covered with dark wood upper and lower cabinets and a gray tiled backsplash. Our client desperately wanted to rid this room of its claustrophobic effect. The husband had a gregarious nature that was expressed in his passion for cooking. He wanted a bright spacious kitchen with large appliances, lots of counter space, lots of sunlight and no upper cabinets!

Our solution included bright white cabinets with an accent of navy blue for the generously sized island. To keep the kitchen feeling spacious, we minimized the visibility of smaller appliances such as having a microwave drawer in the island. To avoid having upper cabinets, we designed a complete wall of floor to ceiling cabinets flanking the column style refrigerator and freezer. The selection of rustic white oak flooring was the perfect solution for providing warmth and balance to the kitchen.

It was love at first sight when we found the eight pointed star accent tile. In Native American culture this popular motif is used in quilting and each patch represents a person in one’s life that loves and supports you. The tile was the perfect finishing touch for our client who loved to share his joy of cooking surrounded by friends and family.

The last image shows a little gem of a powder room that we created under the staircase in the older, more formal section of the house.
